Lone Sail, Green Sea

Erin MacLeod

Oil

24 x 17 cm

2020

A small oil on canvas, 24 by 17 inches, painted in 2020. A single sailboat heels into the wind across a flat, green sea beneath a heavy, overcast sky. The composition is spare: the boat occupies a narrow wedge of the picture plane, the horizon sits low, and the sky presses down with considerable weight. The palette is cool and restrained, built around the particular grey-green of open water under cloud cover, with little warmth to relieve it. That austerity is the point. The lone vessel reads less as a subject than as a measure of scale and solitude, the kind of image that is as much about the surrounding emptiness as about the thing depicted.
